The Globe Aware Game Count: Conservation in Action

Each year during the dry season, volunteers from all walks of life come together for an unforgettable Game Count program in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. They assist conservationists in monitoring the park’s remarkable wildlife by counting mammal populations that visit local waterholes.

Working in small teams, volunteers spend a full 24 hours observing a single water source and recording every animal that comes to drink, from majestic elephants to lions, leopards, and rhinos. The census takes place in September or October, when water is scarce, often during the full moon to enhance nighttime visibility. This hands-on experience contributes vital data to ongoing conservation efforts and offers a rare opportunity to witness Africa’s wildlife up close while making a real difference.

Please take a look at some of the incredible up-close moments captured by our volunteers as they carefully carried out their tasks while also savoring the experience. Pam, who leads the count, shared her praise, saying, “You all had a great count. We’re very impressed with your form filing. Well done!”

Moments like these remind us why we’re here: to protect and preserve these magnificent creatures and their natural habitats. Witnessing wildlife so closely, in their own element, is both humbling and inspiring, a true reward for conservation in action.

When giving back becomes a Legacy of Love

Our Game-Count volunteers were welcomed with songs, smiles, and open hearts at this local school in Zimbabwe! They shared laughter, donations, and meaningful conversations with the children, a day full of learning on both sides.

We also recognize Jeff, a returning volunteer who donated a staggering $4,000 worth of books earlier this year to support these bright young minds. The group took time to remember and honor his beloved wife, Peg, who joined him on the Game Count last year. Her spirit of service continues to inspire us all.

Additional activities you can enjoy include exploring the magnificent Victoria Falls. Volunteer Jeff took a breathtaking helicopter ride over the falls during his Game Count Conservation week, an unforgettable sight we could watch on repeat. You can also experience the thrill of the Devil’s Pool and immerse yourself in the vibrant local culture.

Next year’s count will take place from September 24 to 27. Space is limited, so look for it to be posted soon!

Reflections from Peru

Our corporate volunteers in Peru found themselves surrounded by breathtaking beauty, rich history, and service opportunities that left a lasting impact.

"Peru is one of the most uniquely beautiful places I’ve ever been! The mountains and the history are unparalleled. We were able to serve at a local elementary school in Cusco. We finished a large section of concrete for their courtyard, and we also cleaned out, framed, and painted their new greenhouse. We, of course, played with the kids a lot while we were at it! There were protests around Machu Picchu, which closed down the buses/trains and forced us to hike to Aguas Calientes, over 6 miles at high elevation. Machu Picchu is more massive than I imagined from the documentaries.

It’s such an inspirational place to be to imagine the undertaking it would have been to build something of that scale on top of a mountain at over 7,000ft elevation. I continue to be extremely grateful for experiences like Operation Sunder Serves that take me to beautiful places with the best people."

- Joel Gregory, Sunder September 2025

Joel’s journey is a reminder that service and adventure often go hand in hand, creating unforgettable memories and lifelong gratitude.

Reflections from Peru Cont.

Others found Peru to be a deeply spiritual experience, offering lessons about faith, abundance, and the beauty of simplicity.

"Lessons from Peru.

Machu Picchu was built by the Native Inkas, who had spiritual guidance from the Gods. All good things in life can be accomplished when we put our faith in the great spirit. We are physical beings living in a spiritual experience.

There is no such thing as scarcity or lack. It is a made-up construct that does not exist in nature. When you are feeling stagnant or scarce, look to nature to restore your faith in abundance. Look to the plants, look to the trees, look to the animals. You have always had enough, and you will always have enough.

Put yourself into more positions of service. This will remind you of how truly abundant and blessed you are.

Some of the happiest people in the world are the people who have the least. Remember that when you reach for anything external to yourself.

Not everything needs to be a highlight. Give yourself permission to rest, or you will be forced to rest. Deeply humbled by this epic adventure."

- Gunter Weihe, Sunder September 2025

Gunter’s reflections capture the essence of what Peru teaches so many travelers: gratitude, balance, and a renewed connection to nature and spirit.
