Hearts & Hands in Hout Bay

Our amazing group of CHG volunteers spent an unforgettable week in Hout Bay, South Africa, working closely with the IY Township community. Building on the foundation laid by past Globe Aware volunteers, who constructed a kitchen on the local farm in 2019, this year’s team took the impact even further.

They helped expand the very kitchen by doubling its covered area, installing supports for the stairs, painting and varnishing outdoor furniture, and adding safety railings to improve the community spaces. The group also rolled up their sleeves to prepare and serve more than 800 hot, protein-rich meals to local residents. In the township’s school, they began refurbishing kitchen cabinetry and repairing computers to support student learning in the computer lab.

Beyond the physical projects, the volunteers spent meaningful time connecting with the children, painting colorful games like hopscotch on the playground, assisting older students with basic computer skills, and even enjoying a heartfelt performance from a local children’s choir. They also donated feminine hygiene products, clothing, and bedding to families in need.

But it wasn’t all work! This dynamic team made the most of every moment in South Africa. From shark diving off the coast, exploring Cape Point, and hiking Lion’s Head at sunrise, to strolling through vibrant markets, tasting local wines, visiting a traditional medicine doctor, and spotting penguins and ostriches near the Cape of Good Hope, every experience deepened their appreciation for the culture and community around them. Evenings were filled with laughter and connection, whether sharing a sunset braai at Clifton Beach or dining beachside at the Camps Bay Sports Club. While the scenery was stunning, the true highlight was the spirit of service and the relationships built along the way.

This was more than just a trip; it was a powerful blend of purpose, culture, and connection. A heartfelt thank you to our CHG volunteers for making such a lasting impact!

We'd also like to thank Coordinator Kevin, both Karens, Lulu, Thobane, Tjarla, Zumani, L.P., and the entire team who worked hard to mobilize and provide, along with every CHG volunteer who made it all possible.

Hearts & Hands in Hout Bay: Featuring testimonials

"We were able to provide a hot meal to both encampments and provide protein. Our volunteers provided the protein for both meals. When I learned that, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for the opportunity to provide that vital nutrient. - Heather Allen

"It's always a life-changing experience to work with amazing people who dedicate their lives to making a difference in their communities. So, thank you, CHG HealthCare, for making this trip possible, and to Globe Aware for running such a great program with amazing people. I was able to add more impactful memories in a place I love and with the people of South Africa that once again changed my life!" - Scott Knight

"All of this wouldn't be possible without Globe Aware providing us with amazing hosts...I'm forever grateful for the people I was with and the lifelong relationships we built. 'Ubuntu' means 'I am because we are,' and that couldn't have been more true on this trip." - Sarah McCall

"I had the opportunity to travel to South Africa and work alongside some truly inspiring people. It's always humbling to meet individuals who are so committed to making a positive impact in their communities. Along the way, I got to explore a bit of Africa's incredible beauty and culture. Grateful for everything this journey gave me." - Carlita Davis

I went in hoping to help in some small way. But I walked away having learned far more than I gave. I met people facing real challenges every day and still somehow, each person showed up with joy, strength, and generosity. The way we were welcomed in, with open hearts and zero hesitation, is something the world could use more of. But in South Africa, it's alive and well." - Preya Batra

Beyond the Beach: A Week of Service in Costa Rica

Our group of student volunteers spent their week planting green farming patches at a local school, bringing baby lettuce, basil, cumin, beets, mustard, and green onions to help build a sustainable garden for future students. They also supported the local English teacher by helping students practice conversational English, boosting both language skills and confidence.

In addition, the group mixed concrete for the construction of a small playground and park, creating a lasting space where neighborhood children can play and connect.

Instead of opting for a typical summer break on the beach, these students chose to immerse themselves in service, culture, and community. By exploring the breathtaking Orosi Valley and forming genuine connections with local families, they transformed their break into a deeply rewarding experience.  During their downtime, they explored coffee farms, wandered through local markets, and visited historic sites in Cartago and Orosí's hot springs.

Tzacalá, Mexico Update

The Eugenio Theisen Library and Community Cultural Center in Tzacalá has grown far beyond a traditional library. It has become a dynamic space for community education, a playroom, a classroom, a nursery, a planning hub, and a meeting place. Locals consider it the beginning of a cultural and educational revival in the region.

With over 314 activities hosted, 5,000 books available, and support offered to three generations of students through preparatory courses, the library has had a profound impact. It runs entirely on donations and the dedication of volunteers who believe in equal access to education.

Thanks to the unwavering support of Globe Aware volunteers, who also helped build the library in 2021, and many others, this center thrives without formal funding.

"I am indebted to our friends at Globe Aware, who, without them, all this would not be possible, and I remind you that here you have your home, you have a friend here.” - Cristian Sulub, Municipal Commissioner of Tzacalá

FUNDRAISING GOAL REACHED! THANK YOU!

Clean, Dry Clothes for the Children of Thailand — Mission Accomplished!

Thanks to our amazing springtime volunteers, the generous Zeilman family, and the unwavering dedication of Don Germaise, we’ve officially reached our goal! We’ve raised enough funds to purchase and install a large industrial dryer at our project site in Thailand.

This effort began when Don, during his volunteer vacation, noticed that many of the children, war orphans, and survivors of trafficking, had only one or two sets of clothing. Without access to a dryer, their clean clothes often remained damp in Thailand’s humid climate, leading to persistent and painful skin rashes.

That simple observation sparked something powerful. Don launched the fundraiser, and you guys rallied! In the weeks that followed, dozens of generous donors stepped up. Fellow Thailand volunteer Tara Zeilman and her family, moved by the children’s stories and Don’s passion, helped carry the effort across the finish line.

𝗪𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝗶𝘁. 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.

Now, with temperatures soaring and humidity making it nearly impossible for clothes to dry, this new dryer means less money spent on rash treatments, more comfort, greater dignity, and, most importantly, more time for the kids to be kids.

THANK YOU to everyone who gave, shared, and supported. Your compassion has made a lasting difference.
