Program Spotlight – Cuba Calling

Contrary to what most people believe, Cuba is open, accessible and welcoming.

Although home to more than 11 million people, Cuban culture has been shrouded in mystery to most North Americans because of prolonged economic and political strain between the United States and Cuba. The Care for Cuba program pulls back the curtains on this Caribbean culture and gives volunteers a clear look at the beauties, struggles, and determination of the Cuban people.

There has never been a more exciting time to take part in volunteer travel in Cuba! Imagine a culture where everyone is literate and has access to free medical care, no starving people. This is the Cuba of today. In stark contrast to North America, its southern neighbor also offers almost no material consumer goods. Experience this now, before long anticipated change comes with the passing of the Fidel Castro generation. Open music in streets everywhere, hardly any car traffic, smiles; most visitors are enchanted with a world unlike any they could imagine. The embargo has meant severely restricted commerce, and access to affordable food, but has also preserved and insulated a culture unique in the world.

The volunteer vacation and Globe Aware experience is a rich and fulfilling event. No need to keep it all to yourself. This is why we have created this social media, and conversational hub.

Whether you are just beginning to consider a trip, about to go on your next volunteer vacation, or just want to have some fun interacting with other international volunteers, we’ve got you covered.

Recharge Your Karma Campaign

The well known advertising giant Publicis recently chose Globe Aware to feature as part of a pro-bono campaign they created on our behalf called "Recharge Your Karma." The concept centers on social media platforms and in a humorous way targets college students to "confess their sins and balance your karma scaled by volunteering abroad."

Students in various cities across the nation are hanging posters and fliers encouraging students to take part. The kick off of the campaign started in Dallas, Texas at the Green Elephant on March 29, 2012, where karama-tinis were served, and students uploaded their confessions to the instant karma campaign website. Go to rechargeyourkarma.org to check it out and add your confession - we promise you will get a good giggle!

READERS' CHOICE: What's The Best Volunteer Trip?
Posted by: Budget Travel, Thursday, Mar 15, 2012, 10:54 AM
We get to share our travel picks with you all year long. Now it's your turn.
Over the next several weeks, we'll be asking for a few of your favorite  things, both large (airline, cruise port, national park) and small (which  hotel has the best toiletries?). Then we'll compile your suggestions and let  you vote for your top pick in May. Come back often-we'll be posting a new  question almost every day.

Today's question: What's the best volunteer trip?
"Voluntourism" is helping to reverse the negative image many people have of travelers. And it's not just slave labor-the best volunteer trips combine service with cultural and historical activities, so everybody goes home happy. What's your best voluntourism experience?

Remember the objective of our program:
More than anything, we want to honor our volunteers, to have fun, and we want our facebook community members to become aware of each other. We don't have the lawyers and accountants the Oscar's use to pull off an air-tight campaign so please just have fun and play fair.

Summer is quickly approaching, faster than ever, trees are making leaves and flowers are blooming and a casserole might seem too “wintery”, but this dish, served with a tasty side salad, will be just the ticket to put you in a Cuban state of mind. Especially, if you make yourself a Cuba Libre to sip as you go.
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups shrimp, cooked and peeled
  • 2 cups crushed canned tomatoes
  • 1 onion, minced
  • 1 green pepper, chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, pressed
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups cooked white rice
Preperation:
Saute the onion, garlic and green pepper in the butter. Add the shrimp, salt and pepper. Stir in the canned tomatoes. Add the cooked rice. Place in casserole dish and bake at 375 degrees F for 30 minutes.
