“The village of El Remate is a very poor village, and seeing the conditions that many of the families live in is heartbreaking. It felt good to at least play a little part in making their lives more liveable. Being able to work alongside the families we were helping was very meaningful, and I feel that our team would want to continue our work in Guatemala on future trips to have further impact.
The schedule was perfectly balanced. We likely could have done a little more work if it had been cooler, but given the very hot/humid conditions we were working in, the amount of work was just right.
The food was fantastic at the resort. Chef, there is great - there was more than enough food at every meal. We loved the variety of the meals and how everything was handmade. Even the lunches we had from the local villagers were very good, though there wasn't as much variety in those meals (chicken + rice each lunch).
The accommodations were 10/10. Perfect. Given how hot and humid it was during the day while we were working, the resort was the perfect treat at the end of the day. Air conditioning is a must. Wifi was great so we could talk with our families back home. Beds were comfortable. Hosts/bartender/staff were very kind.
Globe Aware staff was very easy to work with through the planning process. All of our questions were answered ahead of time. Anne was wonderful and so lovely to work with. Her spirit/smile/laughter were infectious, and you can really tell that she has given her life to helping others. Anne is just a lovely soul in general. She was fantastic and very communicative. She gave us a lot of information about the culture and surrounding communities and took every opportunity she could to educate us about the local people and traditions.
The amount of cultural immersion/interaction was great. The mole/tortilla making classes were fun. We danced with some of the women in the women's shelter after clearing their land. We got to know the families we were helping and got to bring them some little gifts and groceries on the last day. There was a small ceremony/ritual we did at the start of our work at Huertas Mujeres del Maiz. We also got to see Tikal on the last day, and a handful of us participated in the temezcal ceremony. These all really helped put more meaning behind the work we were doing.
