Volunteers wanted

It's like a cross between Outward Bound and "Outback Jack."

A Bala Cynwyd film-and-TV producer, Concrete Pictures, is looking for six volunteers for an eight-part TV documentary that will go where no reality show has gone before: into Third World charity work with Globe Aware.

The show's "stars" will work with deaf children in a remote orphanage in Cusco, Peru.

Like any adventure, there will be hardships. The deaf are virtual outcasts in Peru, a source of social embarrassment and guilt, often abandoned, according to the production company. Volunteers are warned it could be "an emotionally intense experience."

If that's not enough, while living expenses in Peru are paid for by the producers, volunteers must pay their own airfare back and forth. The goal: to give kids a sense of self-worth and the vocational skills they'll need to survive. The commitment: Six weeks, starting next month.

"We're looking for six volunteers to go to Peru and we'll see how the kids and the volunteers change," said Patrick Michael of Concrete Pictures.

For those who haven't been scared off, the deadline for applying as a volunteer is Sept. 15.
